LA to send emergency alert to cellphones to urge COVID vaccinations – Daily News

LOS ANGELES – A city-wide emergency alert will be sent to cellphones in Los Angeles on Monday to remind people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 for free.

“We are using all the tools at our disposal to encourage Angelenos to get vaccinated,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said on Twitter Monday morning.

The wireless emergency alert will be sent to mobile devices Monday afternoon and will include information about the city’s vaccine options that are open to all LA County residents.

Sites run by the city of Los Angeles are offering more than 250,000 doses of the vaccine this week, which is the most the city has offered during the pandemic. This total includes 70,000 new doses of Moderna vaccine, 45,000 new doses of Pfizer vaccine and 3,000 new Johnson & Johnson doses which will be added to the remaining supply.

The LA County Director of Public Health on Thursday said the number of people receiving their first COVID-19 vaccine in the county had dropped significantly over the past week, calling the trend “very worrying.”

In order to vaccinate more people, the city:

  • Increase service in fixed vaccination centers from five days a week to six days, now operating Monday to Saturday
  • Open a mobile night clinic at the South Park Recreation Center in South LA from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Offer a drive-thru option in Cal State Los Angeles, allowing up to 9,000 doses per day to be administered at the site

“Our city and our country stand at a critical juncture in our fight to defeat COVID-19 – and as we have done in every phase of this crisis, we are approaching the moment with urgent action: by rolling up our sleeves and by making us shoot. the arms of each Angeleno, ”Garcetti said.

“Los Angeles has enough doses to maintain our momentum, protect our communities from new variants and end this pandemic. So we must all do our part to encourage our families, friends, colleagues and neighbors to get vaccinated as soon as possible. “

The city will also deploy 10 Mobile Outreach for Vaccine Equity teams Monday through Saturday in Wilmington, South Park, Baldwin Hills / Crenshaw, Chesterfield Square / Harvard Park, Highland Park, Westlake, Sylmar, Panorama City and North Hollywood.
