HANAMA’ULU – Ledward Ka’apana knows what people like and he can deliver.
He performs Monday with bassist Jesse Gregorio from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Kaua’i Beach Resort near Hanama’ulu on the next episode of the long-running E Kanikapila Kakou (Let’s Play Music).
People who come early can bring instruments and vocals and learn a song to perform later in the evening.
Ka’apana grew up in a musical family in Kalapana, on the island of Hawaii, where, he says, there were few distractions. There was no electricity, so no television, and not much radio. Residents were left to fend for themselves.
Music was the gift that earned him a lifetime of travels and premiere awards. He is the recipient of the 2011 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts – the U.S. government’s highest honor in folk and traditional arts.
He is one of the few artists to have received the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards which are the Hawaiian equivalent of the American Grammy Awards, for his work as a member of three different recording entities – as a solo artist, as a as a member of Ledward Ka’apana & I Kona, and as a member of Hui ‘Ohana.
In 2010, four of his solo albums received Grammy nominations for Best Hawaiian Musical Album, and he twice won slack-key guitar compilations.
