LAHORE- A sensitization seminar was held Monday at Government College University (GCU), Lahore against excessive use of mobile phones and social networking sites by young people. The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of GCU, Prof. Asghar Zaidi, chaired the seminar titled “Digital Media, A Positive Perspective” which was addressed by Qasim Ali Shah, a prominent trainer and motivational speaker. Qasim Ali Shah said excessive use of mobile phones and social media leads to reduced daily routine, productivity, physical health, social relationships and emotional well-being. He said educational institutions should teach students the productive use of social media and cyber laws. Qasim Ali Shah advised the students to make schedules regarding the use of social media in addition to using mobile phones for important calls and messages of short duration only. He alarmed students that technostress could have serious social consequences. Qasim Ali Shah also asked students to improve their thinking every year, saying, “These devices don’t mean anything; your real strength is your strong character and positive thinking. GCU VC Professor Zaidi told the students that they were lucky because they got admitted to one of the best universities in the country. “So they have to focus on their long-term goals.” He called on students to make wise use of mobile phones and social media. The seminar was organized by the Society of Young Journalists of the CUU.
